Woodthorpe is an expansive single vineyard on elevated river terraces, angled to the sun, located in Hawkes Bay’s Tutaekuri river valley. Originally a colonial settlement, militia encampment, and staging post, it was between 1863 and 1914 home to the annual Woodthorpe races. Today it’s ideal aspect and free-draining soils provide Te Mata Estate a unique location for quality grapes.

Te Mata Estate Woodthorpe Merlot/Cabernet 2005 is bright crimson in colour, with aromas of dark plum, blackberry and red roses. The palate shows currants and spice characters on ripe, powdery tannins with a long, fine finish.

Te Mata Estate Woodthorpe Merlot/Cabernet 2005 is a blend of 57% Merlot, 34% Cabernet and 9% Petit Verdot. It is a natural partner to grilled red meats and hard white cheeses. It will continue to develop in bottle for 3-6 years from harvest.

The Woodthorpe Vineyard Merlot/Cabernet had improved since tasted last year. A blend of 44% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc and 15% Petit Verdot it has good intensity on the nose with black fruits, tobacco, a touch of Xmas cake and decayed leaves. The palate is medium-bodied, fine supple tannins, blackberry, raspberry and a real savory quality coming through on the off-dry finish courtesy of the Cabernet Franc. Off-dry towards the finish, this is an impressive wine.
